Institution of Engineers(Local Centre)

The Kollam Local Centre was established in 2010 and is housed in the campus of TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. At present, there are 1131 members of the Institution of Engineers (India) located in the districts of Kollam, Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha are attached to this centre.

Activities during 2011- 12

On March, 17 and 18th 2012 IEI Kollam Local Centre and TKMIT Karuvelil jointly organized a Two Day National Seminar on Electricity Management & Regulation.

The Institution of Engineers (India), Kollam Local Centre and Dept. of Elec. &Commn’, TKM College of Engg., Kollam are jointly conducted a seminar on “Railway Security System” on 27 thJuly 2012 at TKM College of Engineering auditorium.

Institution of Engineers (India), Kollam local Centre Conducted a Blood Donation Camp on 21st June 2012 at MES Institute of Technology and Management – ‘Nest’ in association withIndian Medical Association Kollam Centre

A technical talk on “Energy, Entropy and Exergy: Applications in the Field of Engineering“. by Dr. Rijo Jacob Thomas, Assistant Professor, Dept of Mechanical Engineering, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, was conducted on 18th  December 2012  at Bishop Jerome Institute, Fathima College Road, Kollam.

On 10thJanuary 2013, a talk on “Effective Teaching” was delivered by Dr.D.Roshan Kumar, Professor in Mechanical Engg., TKM College of Engg.at Bishop Jerome Institute, Kollam

On 6th February 2013, Er.K.Sivadasan delivered a talk on the topic “Vision For Solar Policy In Kerala “ at TKM College of Engineering during inauguration of  electrical and electronics association.

A technical talk on Water Resources &Utilisation  was delivered by  Er.V.K. George FIE, Executive Engineer (Retd.), Kerala Water Authority, on 20th  February2013, at Baselios Mathews II College of Engineering, Sasthamkotta.

Activities during 2013- 14

A public meeting in association with KottamkaraPanchayathwas organized on 5th June 2013, the environment day. Dr. Udayakumar of TKM College of Engineering was the keynote speaker.

  2. Seminar on Construction Technology for the next decade on 7th March 2014, at Bishop Jerome Institute.
  3. Seminar on Solid and Hazardous Waste Management on 11th March 2014 at UKF College of Engineering
  4. Co-sponsored the technical fest YANTHROLSAVconducted by TKM Institute of Technology, Ezhukone.
  5. Forest Day was celebrated on 21st March 2014 at MES College of Engineering, Chathanoor.

Activities during 2014- 15

A press conference was conducted on 29th May 2014 on “Solar Policy”. The chairman, Dr.M.Jayaraju, Dr.S.Jose and the committee members,  Er.K.Sivadasan, Dr.MuhammedSajid, Er.R.Sheeba&Er.Gouri Mohan attended the meet. There was good media coverage about the deliberations.

Environment Day was celebrated on 9th June 2014, in association with Dept of Chemical Engg., TKM College of Engg., Kollam. Prof. Sasikumar, HOD, Dept of BioTechnology, Sree Buddha College of Engg., Pattoor.was the chief guest. He delivered a talk on “E-waste management”.

A joint program was organised in association with Quilon Management Association (QMA) Kollam on 29th October 2014 at Crowther Masonic Hall, Kollam.  MrK.R.Narayana Pillai, Former Director, Export Inspection Council of India, was the Chief Guest and he talked about “Food Standards and Safety”.

World standards day was celebrated on 17th October 2014 at UKF College of Engg and Technology,Parippally,Kollam. Dr.M.Jayaraju the former Chairman of IE(I) Kollam Local centre presented a seminar on “Fire Safety and Fire Prevention Planning”.

In association with the Department of Electronics and Communication Engg., TKM College of Engineering, Kollam, organised a two day workshop on the topic “SELF AWARENESS AND PURPOSEFUL LIVING”. The workshop was held on 9th and 10th January 2015. The sessions were handled by Mr. Arul Dev, the founder and managing director of People First Organisation, Chennai.

A panel discussion was organized at Hotel Sea Pearl, Kollam on 22nd March 2015 as part of World Water Day celebrations. The Chairman, Dr.S.Jose welcomed the gathering and made introductory remarks on the theme “Water and Sustainable Development”. The following members participated in the Panel Discussion: Er. P.Rajendra Prasad, Er.K.Sivadasan, Er.R.Sree Kumar, Er. Sunil Kumar and Prof. U. Rasheed Kutty. The Hon. Secretary, Er. P.Rajendra Prasad concluded the discussion and offered vote of thanks. 

Activities during 2015- 16

World Environment day was observed on 5th June in association with M/s Sarathy Auto Cars, Kollam. The programs were free pollution check up for vehicles and free distribution of tree saplings. Dr.S.Jose, Chairman inaugurated the event.

National Technology day was celebrated by IEI Kollam Local Centre in association with MES Institute of Technology and Management, Chathanoor on 15th May 2015. Prof. POJ Lebba, General Secretary, Muslim Educational Society, Kerala (former Principal, TKM College of Engg., Kollam) inaugurated the program. Prof. M.Jayaraju, Principal, MESITM presided over the meeting. Prof. S.Jose, Chairman, IEI Kollam Local Centre felicitated the program. Prof.S.Parameswaran, HOD, Mechanical Dept, MESITM made a presentation on “Future of Engineering Education”. The program was well attended by IEI members as well faculty of MESITM.

One Day Seminar on Challenges and Opportunities of Entrepreneurs was organized jointly by the Quilon Management Association and Institution of engineers India Kollam local centre. It was conducted on 25th April, 2015 at Kollam Beach Hotel. The program was inaugurated by Sri Shibu baby John, Hon’beMininster for Labour and Sri K.P Ramachandran nair . Chairman Key Pee group and President Kerala State Small Industries Association given Key note address. The meeting was presided by QMA president Sri K G Jacob and Sri Rajendra Prasad, Secretary, IEI welcomed the gathering. The seminar organizing committee chairman Dr. P G Mathews given vote of thanks.

An environmental protection awareness programme was conducted on 5th June in Titanium Sponge Plant(TSP) of KMML, Kollam in collaboration with The Institution of Engineers (India), Kollam Local Centre.  Mr. P. Rajendraprasad, Hon. Secretary & JGM (TSP), chaired the programme. In his presidential address, he highlighted the burning environmental issues and the control strategies for its solutions. Mr. B. K. Vijay Sai, AGM (TSP), delivered a talk on Energy Conservation techniques in general and improvement of energy efficiency in air compressor operation in specific.

A faculty development program conducted at TKM College of Engg., Kollam was co-sponsored by IEI Kollam Local Centre. The topic was Advanced Mechanics of Materials and co-ordinated by Dr.S.Jose and Dr.V.N. Ajukumar of Mechanical Engg Dept. It was attended by 25 participants from various other engineering colleges along with 20 internal participants. The FDP was conducted during 22-26th June 2015.  Dr.S.Ayoob, Principal, TKMCE, inaugurated the program on 22nd June and Dr.S.Anil Lal, Professor, College of Engineering, Trivandrum gave an introduction on the subject.

The student chapter of Institution of Engineers (India) under Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Bishop Jerome Institute, Kollam, named as “Kollam Bishop Jerome Institute Students Chapter (Electrical)” was inaugurated by Dr. S Jose, Chairman, IEI Kollam Local Centre on 29th July 2015. The meeting was presided by Rev.Fr. Rajesh Martin (Manager, BJI) and felicitated by Dr.SusanJ.Panicker (Principal,BJI) and Prof. John Jacob (Dean, School of Engineering, BJI).  Prof.LissammaPanjikaran (Head of the Department, Electrical and Electronics Engineering) and Prof.ChannuLal the staff advisor  IEI students chapter also attended the function.  Following the inauguration there was a technical presentation on the topic “Innovative Trends in Transmission and Distribution” by Er. Sayed Ali, Asst Engineer, KSEB.

In association with Quilon Management Association an interactive workshop on “Quality in Education” was conducted on 8th August, 2015 at Kollam Beach Hotel. Prof. Dr. Cyriac Thomas, Former Vice Chancellor, M G University inaugurated the work shop and Sri G Vijayaraghavan, Former CEO of Techno park gave the key note address. The theme of the workshop was introduced by Prof. P O J Lebba, Former Dean, Kerala & Cochin University. Professor R V G Menon, Former Principal, Govt. Engineering College, Kannur, Dr. Ajay Ghosh, Director of CSIR – NIST, Prof. K Sasikumar, Chairman, SreeBudha College of Engineering and  Dr. S Ravindran Nair, Director, SCERT were the speakers and panel experts.

Engineers Day was observed on 15th September at  Beach Hotel and Convention Centre Kollam at 5PM. Er. P.Rajendra Prasad, Hon. Secretary welcomed the gathering and gave a life sketch of Sir.M.Viswesarayya.Dr.S.Jose, Chairman in his presidential address highlighted the theme “Engineering Challenges for Knowledge Era” and gave an introduction about the importance of the day. This was followed by a technical talk on “Sustainable engineering“by Prof. A Sudheer, Asst Professor, TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. Er. K. Sivadasan proposed vote of thanks.

On 30th September 2015 an introductory program on Institution of Engineers (India) student chapter was conducted at Caarmel Engineering College, Perunad, Pathanamthitta.The meeting was presided by  Dr. Paul A. J. , Principal, Caarmel Engineering College.  Prof. Dr. S.Jose,Chairman ,IE(I) Kollam, lighted the lamp to inaugurate the program and gave an introduction about the student chapter formation and suggested activities. Er. R. Sreekumar offered vote of thanks. The meeting was followed by a technical session on “A vision for solar policy of Kerala” by  Er. K Sivadasan, Rtd. Chief Engineer,KSEB.

World Habitat day was celebrated at Sree Buddha College of Engineering, Pattoor on 5th October 2015 under the banner of Institution of Engineers (India), Kollam Local Centre and Student Chapter of IEI, SBCE Pattoor.  Student chapter(Civil) of IEI, SBCE was inaugurated by Er. P. Rajendra Prasad, Hon.Secretary, IEI, KLC.  The meeting was presided by Dr. Suresh Babu, Principal SBCE and Dr. E K Bhass, HOD, Civil, welcomed the gathering.  The meeting was followed by two technical talks, the first one by Prof Subhash Varma, on the topic “ Sustainable Habitat for Tomorrow”and the second one was by  Ms. Meera G Mohan on the theme  of the day, “ Public Spaces for All”.  Er. Pradeep, Advisor, Student Chapter offered vote of thanks.

An all India seminar on Recent Advances in Nano Technology was organized by Institution of Engineers, Kollam  Localcentre on 16 &17th of October 2015 at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam. The seminar was inaugurated by Dr. Feby Varghese, Managing Director, KMML, Kollam. The inaugural meeting was presided by Dr.M.K.Balakrishnan Nair, Member, IEI KSC. Dr.S.Jose welcomed the gathering and Er. Rajendra Prasad offered vote of thanks. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Dhamodaran of Amrita Centre for Nanosciences, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, AIMS, Kochi. The topic was “Recent Advances in Nanotechnology for Energy Applications”. The second day had six technical presentations by eminent scientists and was attended by nearly 100 participants from various parts of the country. The forenoon session was chaired by Dr. M. Jose Prakash, Professor, TKM College of Engineering. The first session was by Dr. Kuruvila Joseph, Dean Sr. Professor, Indian Institute of Space Technology (IIST), ISRO. Trivandrum, on the topic, Nanomaterials in Space & Medical application. Prof. Padmavathy, from Govt. Engineering College, Trichur was the next speaker on the topic “Nano Technology applications in water & waste water processing.” The third technical session was on “Recent Trends in Nano Magnetism” by Dr.Manoj Rama Varma, Senior Principal Scientist , CSIR-NIIST , Trivandrum. The after noon session was chaired by Dr. Raveendran, Principal, Sree Narayana College, Varkala. Dr. Jebera, DM ( R& D) , Kerala Minerals and Metals Ltd (KMML), Kollam made the next presentation on the topic “ Recent Developments in Nano Titanium dioxide.” Subsequently, Dr. Harish from NIIST, Trivandrum opened the discussion on “Photocatalysis to Photovoltaics: Nano Ceramics for functional Applications”. The concluding technical Session was on “Computational Methods in Nano Technology” by Dr. Mohan G., Professor, SCT College of Engineering, Trivandrum.

On 19th October, a Panel Discussion on “Cashew Industry -Challenges and opportunities” was jointly organized along with  Quilon Management Association and was conducted at Hotel Quilon Beach. Er. Rajendra Prasad, Hon. Secretary and President of QMA presided and welcomed the gathering. Sri Harikrishnan Nair, Chairman CII Kerala State Centre & CEO, Western India Cashews,Kollam, Sri Sundaran P, Vice-Chairman , Cashew Export Promotion council of India and Sri Jayachandran, Managing Director, CAPEX were the panelists.

The Kollam local centre co-sponsored the International Conference conducted by the Dept of Mechanical Engineering at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam during 14-16 December 2015. 10 members of the centre registered and  attendedthe conference as delegates.

In association with QMA an “International Seminar on Engineering & Management” was held at Bangkok during 10th  to 15th February 2016.

The student chapter (MechEngg) at Caarmel Engineering College, Perunad, Rannywas  inaugurated on 10th March 2016 by Er. Rajendra Prasad, Hon Secretary.

On 16st March 2016, a joint programme was organized along with Quilon Management Association (QMA)  at Quilon Beach Hotel. Dr. Manoj Kumar Kini, Associate Professor, Department of Architecture, College of Engineering, Thiruvananthapuram was the Chief Guest and his talk was on “Sustainable Architecture in Kerala Context: Need of the time”.

Activities during 2016- 17

The Entrepreneurship Development cell of TKMCE organized Global Summit on Technology and Entrepreneurship TES’16, as a flagship event packed with two days of complete exposure to the world of innovation, entrepreneurship, technology and networking to bring about changes for the good to the existing ecosystem. This event was co-sponsored by the Kollam Local cente and the event was conducted on 9th& 10th April at TKM College of Engineering, Kollam.

An All India Seminar was organized on “Challenges & Opportunities of Titanium Industries” from 22nd July 2016 to 23rd July 2016 at Kollam Beach Hotel. The event was supported by the Chemical Division Board of IEIand in association with Quilon Management Association (QMA).

The program was inaugurated by Honorable Minister for Industries and Sports, Shri E.P.Jayarajan on 22nd July. Shri M. P. Sukumaran Nair , Chairman RIAB, IEI Council Member and Chemical Division chairman presided the function. The Key Note Address given by Padma Shri. Mr. M.C. Dathan, (Scientific Adviser to Chief Minister, Govt. of Kerala & Former Director VSSC). Dr. L.V.Muralikrishna Reddy, Immediate Past President Institution of Engineers (India), Dr. Ajayaghosh , Director CSIR-NIIST and Dr. Febi Varghese, Managing Director, KMML, felicitated the event.

On 1st August 2016 a talk by Sri. P.H.Kurian IAS, Principal Secretary (Industries), was organized in association with Quilon Management Association at Hotel Quilon Beach. The topic was “Creation of start upsystems in Kerala and challenges”. It was well attended by members of IEI, QMA and student members.

The Student Chapter (Mechanical Engineering) at TKM College of Engineering Kollam was inaugurated by Dr. N. Syam Mohan, Project Director, RLV, VSSC on 10th August at APJ Hall in T K M College of Engineering. In the same function, the Institutional Membership Certificate was handed over to Dr.S.Ayoob, Principal, T K M College of Engineering.
