The Department of Architecture was set up in 1985, with an annual intake of 20 students. The fundamental thrust of the department has been to emphasize the practical nature of the profession. The Department improves the design skill of students by concentrating in the design methodology. The Course equips the students for the profession with its six months training and tenth semester thesis. The Department, since its inception, has been associated with various real time development programs of the district and of the state. ZONASA, the zonal convention of the National Association of Students of Architecture was hosted by the department in 1992 and 2010. The department celebrated its silver jubilee in 2010.

Faculty of the department are specialised in Architectural Design, Urban Design, Conservation, Planning, Housing, Building Science and Technology, Construction Management and Transportation Planning.

The B.Arch is a 10 semester course affiliated to Kerala University. This program is recognized by the Council of Architecture and All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).

The candidates seeking admission to this course should have the following basic requirements. The students should have passed the Kerala Higher Secondary Plus two Examination or 12th standard of CBSE, ICSE, VHSE or equivalent there to with 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks for Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together. Diploma holders with 50% marks are also eligible for admission. 85% of total intake is filled from the Kerala State Entrance examination Rank list and the remaining by the management. All students seeking admission to this course should pass NATA conducted by the council of Architecture.

At the end of the Architecture Programme, the B. Arch graduate will be able to

  1. Apply the knowledge of architectural design principles, arts and science and engineering knowledge in the design of built environment.


  1. Identify and analyze the various aspects in all courses and relate it to built environment.


  1. Formulate appropriate methodology to address the design problems with creativity.


  1. Explore complex issues related to architecture and planning and derive a mechanism to address them.


  1. Use modern tools & techniques necessary for architectural design and practice.


  1. Relate the socio-cultural and economic aspects in architecture and planning to derive solutions.


  1. Use available resources judiciously for a sustainable development.


  1. Adhere to the architectural code of ethics in the profession.


  1. Coordinate and work in collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to successfully complete design projects.


  1. Communicate, and use appropriate means to convey ideas for different stages of professional practice.

Course Details

B.Arch.- Architecture (Full Time Graduate Course)

Admission Eligibility

    1. Candidates with a pass in the Plus – Two Examination of Kerala Higher Secondary Board or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto, securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together are eligible for admission.
    2. Candidates with a diploma in engineering awarded by the Board of Technical Education of the Government. of Kerala or a Diploma as accepted equivalent thereto securing a minimum of 50% marks in the final diploma examination are eligible for admission.
    3. Reservation to SC,ST and other communities are available as per rules and regulations of the Government from time to time.
    4. 15% of the seats are reserved under Management quota . Those who want to get admission under the Management quota should apply to the management and qualify the Engineering entrance examination conducted by Commissioner of Entrance Examination; Government of Kerala.
    5. Those who seek admission in B.Arch Degree course should qualify NATA conducted by the Council of Architecture.

Duration of the Course:

The programme is conducted in ten semesters.


The Architecture Department has a Department Library.Almost all the books prescribed in the syllabus are available in the library.Project reports and seminar papers are also available in the library.


1. Material Testing Laboratory

A lab in this Department for non-destructive testing of materials is first of its kind in Kerala. Rebound hammer, Anvil Ultra Sonic Testing, Profrmeter , Corrosion analyzing instrument are some of the equipments which can be very useful in many non-destructive architectural and structural diagnostics.

2. Environmental Laboratory

The Department has set up a digital environmental lab that can give accurate measurements about a given location by using the state of the art sensors and monitors which can be interfaced with Personal computers to give a long period analytical study and results of the microclimate of the built environment.

3. Acoustics Laboratory

Acoustic Lab in the department has various high end instruments for measuring and analyzing sound level, reverberation time, noise doze and other related parameters with high accuracy.

4. Construction Yard

The Department has a mobile Pug Mill unit which is capable of on site Brick making out of different materials.

5. Fine Arts Studio

A Fine Arts Studio to improve the drawing and painting skills of the students also has space for exhibition of the contemporary work done by the students.

6.Computer studio

The Department has an exclusive CADD Studio with Forty Six stand alone machines with appropriate software and plotters.

7.Photography Lab

The Department has a photography Lab for improving the photography skills of the students.

CONTEMPORARY CHATUSHALA HOUSES OF KERALA: A Shape Grammar Model for Layout Generation





AICTE has approved a new PG Course of M. PLAN (Urban Planning) to the Department of Architecture, and the Institution has applied for the affiliation of this course from University of Kerala.



In connection with the conjura`12- National level technical symposium, the Department of Architecture organized a technical paper presentation on the theme `Adaptive Reuse’ There were paper presentations by the students from colleges in and outside the state of Kerala.




Prof. Ramaswamy. N has won the SATTE Achievers Awards 2012 at the National level for the achievement in recognition for inspiring and innovative work done by individuals in innovative Adaptive reuse of Heritage Concepts and properties for Tourism purpose.


Birla Yuva Ratna awards 2012- Prof. Ramaswamy. N has won the Faculty award at National level for inspiring and guiding students to compete at International level.


Prof. Poornima Kurup, secured the M. Tech Degree in Building Technology and Construction Management from Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai.


Prof. Gadhi has represented Kollam district for the state Soft Tennis Championship held at Kozhikode and won the Second prize for the District.




Prof Sumam Panjikkaran has published a research paper on ‘Architectural expression of a Cultural symbiosis- Kalloorkad St. Mary’s church- a Case study’ in the ‘ABACUS-monsoon 2012’, journal.


Prof. Sumam Panjikkaran has presented the following papers in various Conferences and Conventions a)Technical paper presentation on the topic ”The need for conserving Historic buildings and Spaces” in the National Seminar on Heritage & Conservation- July 2012 at Sathyabama University Chennai, b)Technical paper presentation on the topic “Church Architecture of Kerala of the 16th-17th Centuries’ in the Seminar at School of Architecture & Planning, Chennai, on November 2012


A research paper on’ Promoting Sustainability in School Design’ by Prof. Jolly John was accepted for presentation in the National level Conference, January 2013  at R I T Kottayam.


Technical paper on the topic “Towards Sustainability- An innovative approach for conservation of natural resources in Housing sector” by Prof Sumam Panjikkaran was accepted for presentation in the National level Conference, January 2013 at R I T Kottayam.


Nazneen Ashraf and Mariam Shahana secured the First and Second ranks respectively for the S10 B. Arch Degree Examination –July 2012 by the University of Kerala.

Anoop P of S10 B Arch won the prestigious Birla White Yuva Ratna Awards 2012 (Design) at the National Level.

First Research scholar has been registered for Ph. D work (University of Kerala) under the guidance of Dr. Dili A. S.

Prof. Jolly John and Prof. Sumam Panjikraran have been continuing their Ph. D Research work during 2012 and Prof. Nizar. S.A has been registered to Kerala University for his Research work.

Dr. Dili A. S. has recently constructed an Ultra-Low cost Dwelling unit (2 attached bedrooms with all facilities) on the terrace of an existing old house (70 years) with a new technology and structural system. This house is equipped with an effective passive environment control system which makes the interior “COOL” in all seasons in Kerala’s warm-humid climate. This technology has been derived from his scientific research on the passive environment control system of traditional architecture of Kerala. This technology is also applicable for constructing houses in other warm-humid regions of India.

Articles regarding this matter have been published in “The Hindu”, “Mathrubhumi” and “Kerala Kaumudi” news papers and “Designer+Builder” and “Architects HOME NEWS” magazines.


AICTE has approved Rs. 8.5 Lakhs under the MODROBS Scheme for the Modernization of Architectural Acoustics Laboratory, with Prof Jolly John as the Chief Coordinator.




A Second batch of 40 students in the B ARCH course has been approved in the Department of Architecture and classes have been started from the Academic Year 2013-14.

Prof. Ramsawamy. N has been awarded with Birla Yuva Ratna award for the faculty guide in National level Architectural Design Competition in January 2013 at Mumbai.

Prof. Ramaswamy. N has been nominated as the Special invitee on advisory board of Education committee of Council of Architecture and appointed as a Permanent invitee for State Art & Heritage Commission, Government of Kerala.

Dr. Sumam Panjikkaran has been selected as a Member of the expert Committee of the C.O.A inspection in May 2014, at R.B School of Architecture, Bangalore

Dr. Dili. A.S has received the National Professional Excellency Award – for the year 2014 (PROFEX ’14) for his research work leading to the novel designing of COOL HOME –the environment friendly Cost Effective House.

Architectural Thesis project “A temple to knowledge-A tribute to father of Malayalam” of Hamid M M of  S10 B. Arch has been awarded with the Citation from South India category and has been selected among top 10 projects in All India category in the Annual Thesis projects Competition by NIASA Thesis awards.

Shamil Iqbal and Mukhil Chandran of S5 B Arch have won Citation for their Design Presentation in the Design Competition conducted by Indian institute of Architects, Kollam chapter.

Edwin James of S9 B Arch has secured Citation and Anand Vishnu of S5 B Arch has secured Third prize in the Photography Competition in the Symposium conducted by D G College of Architecture, Malppuram


Prof. Ramaswamy. N has continued his research in Experimenting with lime and lime mortar to be used in Historical buildings and also the Structural problems occurring in Historic buildings

Project Proposal entitled `Acoustic Design of School Buildings- A Scientific evaluation of acoustic environments of Secondary and Higher secondary schools in Kollam` by Prof. jolly John was accepted by Kerala State Council for Science, Technology and Environment (KSCSTE)

Thesis submitted by Prof. Sumam Panjikaran “Advent of Portuguese and the Developments in Church Architecture of Kerala, India in the 16th-17th centuries” as part of Ph.D research was recommended for award of Ph.D Degree.
