The Department of Electronics & Communication Engineering, started in the year 1977, has carved a niche for itself by offering the most competent instructional programme to the students. T K M College of Engineering is one of the pioneers in introducing the Bachelor Program for Electronics and Communication Engineering in Kerala. At present, B.Tech Degree course has the sanctioned intake of 60. Students from international community such as Tanzania, Nepal have successfully completed their graduation from this Department. The department has been consistently producing illustrious graduates who occupy prestigious positions in Industrial, Academic, Defense and Research fields in India and abroad.
The department also offers M.Tech programme in Communication Systems from the year 2012 onwards. The sanctioned intake is 18. The department is on the verge of getting itself approved as a research centre of the University of Kerala. It has signed MoU with many leading Industrial and research organisations such as Tata Elxsi, Tata Consultancy Services, Network Systems Private Limited(NEST) etc. to carry out research, consultancy works and internships.
The department has well experienced faculty with postgraduate and doctoral qualifications from prestigious institutions with many international and national publications to their credit. The faculty members are regularly updating their skills by attending and organizing refresher courses in their areas of specializations.
The performance of our students in University examinations, Indian Engineering Services, GATE, CAT and such other competitive examinations are commendable. Most of the students get placement in reputed industries via campus recruitment. Our students regularly figure among the rank holders of the University. They also participate in intercollegiate competitions and used to present papers in national and international conferences.
The department has well equipped laboratories and computing facility for conducting existing courses. In addition to the Central library, there is a department library with around 3000 volumes of books. Moreover it has a good collection of journals, technical magazines project reports and seminar reports.
The ECE association of the department organizes various technical programmes related to academic study and personality development including national seminars, paper presentation and workshops in the state of the art technologies.

B. Tech in Electronics & Communication Engineering Programme of our college is affiliated to University of Kerala.
Candidates with a pass in the Plus – Two Examination of Kerala Higher Secondary Board or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry as optional subjects or any other examination accepted as equivalent thereto, securing a minimum of 50% marks in Mathematics and 50% marks in Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry put together are eligible for admission.
Admission is made by a selection committee constituted by the Government of Kerala.
Reservation to SC,ST and other communities are available as per rules and regulations of the Government from time to time
15% of the seats are reserved under Management quota. Those who want to get admission under the Management quota should apply to the management and qualify the Engineering entrance examination conducted by Commissioner of Entrance Examination; Government of Kerala.
Duration of the Course:
The programme is conducted in eight semesters.
The M.Tech degree Course is for two years comprises of four semesters. Eligibility for admission to M.Tech (Communication Systems) programme is a ‘pass’ in the B.Tech degree in Electronics and Communication or Applied Electronics and Instrumentation with 60% marks of University of Kerala or an equivalent degree of any other University recognized by the University Of Kerala with a valid GATE score. Duration is counted from the first registration date of the student (in the first semester). Credit system is adopted for the course. Grade point average is calculated on the basis of all courses taken by the student. The total credits for the course is 69.
The Department is having a library with ample space and large collection of books, to support the faculty and students of the Department. The Library’s collection aims to be particularly strong in the areas relevant to the Electronics and Communication stream. There are around 3000 volumes of books. The library provides access to wide range of resources such as text books, Reference manuals, Journals and technical magazines.
All the books prescribed in the syllabus for undergraduate and post graduate courses are made available in the Departmental library. Moreover it has a good collection of project reports, and seminar reports.
A good collection of books are contributed by the alumni of our department mainly 1987 batch and 1995 batch. Neethi memorial book bank is sponsored by the parents and class mates of Late Mrs. Neethi Vijayaraghavan, alumni of the department(1987 batch).
Library is accessible for students and faculty members during the working hours of the College. Books are issued to the faculty and students of the Department.
Tutronics is the laboratory video tutorials developed by the department.
This is an entry level laboratory, where students get opportunity to study device characteristics. This lab facilitates the study of characteristics of various semiconductor devices including diodes, MOSFETs BJTs, SCRs, UJTs etc. Basic experiments in microelectronic circuits using semiconductor devices are also included. Major equipments in the lab includes analog and digital CROs, Function generator, Power supply,(fixed and variable) Breadboard, Multimeter,DC indicating meters (various ranges),Output power meters, RLC meters etc.
The objective of this lab is to perform rigorous experiments to consolidate basic knowledge in digital electronics. Experiments include Design, construction, testing, and evaluation of digital systems. Implementation of combinational as well as sequential circuits are carried out in lab practice. Students get an opportunity to have hands on experience in learning logic circuits using digital ICs. The lab is equipped with Digital trainer kits, Logic probes, CROs and Power supplies.
Analog Integrated Circuits (AIC) lab introduces the Operational Amplifier characteristics and applications to the students. They use to perform the measurements of various opamp parameters and applications of opamps such as amplifiers, oscillators, filters etc.
Communication Laboratory consist of analog and digital communication experiments like modulators, demodulators, filters etc. They also design and implement various application circuits of ICs like NE555 timer, NE565 and CD4046 PLL.
This laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipments like RF Oscillators, frequency synthesizers, Spectrum analyzers, IC Testers etc.
The Microprocessor and Microcontroller Laboratory is envisioned to provide an insight into the working of a processor and for familiarizing the programming of 16/8 bit Microprocessors and microcontrollers. This lab aims in inculcating the knowledge of programming skills by executing various programs like arithmetic operations, code conversions, searching and sorting algorithms studied in the Microprocessor and Microcontroller course. The lab is also used by the students to interface the microprocessor and microcontroller to various peripheral devices to generate waveforms, perform A/D and D/A conversions, Displays, Digital clock. Microprocessor lab helps the students to enhance their knowledge on architecture, programming and interfacing of various processors and microcontrollers. Students from other branch of engineering and sciences also utilize this lab and develop their skills in the field of microprocessor and its applications. The features and facilities available in this lab will help the students to do their projects and enhance their knowledge on the latest trends and technologies
The objective of this lab is to acquaint with microwave and optical communication techniques & technologies in microwave communication. Also it covers design and verification of the concepts of modern digital communication like Digital modulation techniques, Fiber Optic Communication, Characteristics of microwave waveguide and MMIC components. Important Equipments includes Microwave benches, Optical source, Optical Fiber Trainer, Optical power meters, Spectrum analyzers, DSO kits, Optical Time Reflectometer (OTDR), RF Simulation Tool and OPTISIM Simulation Software.
The lab envisages a broader plan for creating an Integrated Development Environment for analog, digital and mixed signal design. State of the art facilities for design of sophisticated circuits from specification, simulation, synthesis and layout are available. It is a destiny for research scholars, post graduate and undergraduate students for carrying out their research work, projects, dissertations etc. The lab is having collaborative projects with NEST and the facilities in following segments are available for enthusiastic researchers.

TCAD Tool for Modeling and Simulation of state of the art quantum MOS structures in Si, GaAs, SiGe in 3D and OLEDs, OPVs, OFETs. The individual components of TCAD software consists of Quantum 2D, Organic Solar, Organic Display, TFT 2D, TFT 3D,Quantum 3D, Interactive tools Tonyplot 2D, Tonyplot 3D, Deckbuild and Devedit.
This lab is intended for the product design and fabrication of Electronic products. Students are fabricating working models. Design, PCB layout, soldering, packaging and testing of Electronic products are carried out in this lab. The facilities include soldering stations, PCB layout and design softwares like ORCAD, PSPICE.
DSP is a fast growing area which is having applications in various engineering streams. Analysis of signals using DSP techniques reveals lot of information. The experiments in the DSP lab concentrates in the realization of various digital filters, simulation of DSP systems etc. Major equipments available in the DSP lab are DSP kits (ADSP-218X, SHARC DSP EZ TMS320C6711),LABVIEW and MATLAB softwares.
9. Department Computing Facility
The department is well equipped with computers having advanced system configuration. There are 40 terminals with full time internet facility.Licensed Engineering software packages like LABVIEW, ORCAD, CS Studio Suit, OPTISIM, MATLAB etc are available in this lab.
10. PG & Research Laboratory
This lab is particularly assigned for the post graduation students of the department. They used to practice the experiments in communication systems. The facility in the lab includes 20 modern computers, CS studio Suit for antenna design.

Department is committed in fostering research activities in emerging areas of Electronics & Communication Engineering. Well equipped lab in VLSI is dedicated for the research purpose along with other laboratories. Part time Ph.D scholars are pursuing their research in this lab. Four faculty members are registered guides in University of Kerala. Ten of our faculty members are continuing their research in various streams like VLSI Design, Image processing, Signal Processing, Optical Communication, Soft Computing, Gesture Identification, etc. Every year multiple numbers of papers are published in journals of International & National reputes as an outcome of ongoing research.
Department already applied for the research centre under University of Kerala and the approval is awaited. Also the department is in the process of applying various research projects grants under various agencies like Department of Science & Technology, Kerala State Council for science, Technology & Environment (KSCSTE) etc.
The students from this department have acquired University first rank several times.
Most of the alumni of this department are employed in reputed companies and institutions in India and abroad. About 90% students of the existing batch got placements through campus placements.

IETE (Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering)
The Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, India, is a leading professional society established in 1953 and consists of more than 1.2 lakh members. The IETE focuses on advancing the science and technology of Electronics, Telecommunications, Computers and Information Technology by conducting technical meeting, conference, symposia, exhibitions and related activities all over the country at its 65 Centres. IETE publishes three technical journals, viz IETE Journal of Research, IETE Technical Review and IETE Journal of Education and four-monthly IETE Newsletter. The major objective of IETE is to assist and contribute in the production and development of top quality professional engineers and technicians needed by the industries and other organizations. The IETE student branch of the college is organizing a number of innovative programs for the students and teachers under the leadership of teachers.
Electronics and Communication Association
The ECE Association aims at promoting awareness and knowledge about electronics & Communication engineering to outside masses as well as provides a forum for mutual interaction to students of the Department of ECE. The Association organizes activities such as technical quiz, debate, industrial problem solving, group discussion, seminars, technical lectures etc.
IEEE SB TKMCE
It has been 25 exuberant years since IEEE first entered the portals of TKMCE. The pedigree of TKMCE SB is enormous since its inauguration on 22nd November 1986 and it has always been on the right track in exploring and exploiting technology for the benefit of humanity. The voyage of TKMites in the ocean of IEEE has been eventful with many prestigious awards and rewards to their credit. Adding a golden feather to its cap, the Student Branch won the Region10 Exemplary Student Branch Award 2010 for the third best student branch in the Asia-Pacific Region. Retaining the crowned glory, we had the honour of hosting the Asia focused ISGT 2011 India, International Conference. Combining the guidance of the best of faculty members and the prowess of an active group of student members, we are sure to scale greater heights!
