TKMCE CONNECTS is a new initiative of TKM College of Engineering, Kollam intended to reach out to young minds of society. It is the latest addition to many social outreach programmes taken up by the institute like ‘Back to School’, ‘Back to Home’, etc. The objective of the new venture is to create and nurture concepts in Engineering. It may also create awareness in students about the scope of Engineering and its influence on making people’s life easier. The programmes conducted during the academic year 2022-23 and its details are shown below.
1. Visit to Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kollam
As a part of this program, a team of faculty members and technical staff members from TKMCE visited Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kollam on 21 January 2023 and conducted a one-day work shop for classes 6, 7 and 8 with live demonstration on the topics 3D printing, basics of plumbing circuits, pipe joints, plumbing tools and the basics of electrical wiring. The basic concepts of 3D printing, plumbing and electrical wiring were explained with the help of Power point presentations and live demonstrations.
As part of the programme, high school students from TKM Higher Secondary School visited the Department of Mechanical Engineering on 15/02/2023. The programme was inaugurated by Dr. T. A. Shahul Hameed, Principal, TKM College of Engineering at 9.30 am in the PTA Hall. Dr. P. N. Dileep , Professor and Head, presided over the function. 120 students were divided into six batches of 20 students each and was taken to various laboratories under the guidance of staff members. The students visited Machine Shop, Computer Integrated Manufacturing Lab, Metallurgy Lab, AICTE-IDEA lab, Heat Engines Lab and Fluid Mechanics & Hydraulic Machines lab. In each lab the students were initially given a basic introduction about the equipment / processes through presentations and later taken to the lab for live demonstrations. In addition, working models were presented before them for enhanced learning. Students interacted with the faculty and cleared their doubts, which made the session very fruitful. Dr. TS Krishnakumar and Dr. Ajukumar VN of the Department of Mechanical Engineering coordinated the event.
Outcomes:
Knowledge Dissemination: The program helped to provide educational and practical information on many new and relevant engineering areas and topics for the school students. It also pprovided an opportunity to interact with school students and understand their aspirations
