Standards Club

Standardization in the field of engineering plays a crucial role in streamlining the quality of product/process developed by different technologies. Quality consciousness, based on standardization, is one of the pillars of accelerated economic development. Established on November 29, 2023, and officially endorsed by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) on December 13, 2023, the Standards club (SC-8959) at TKM College of Engineering is dedicated to empowering future engineers with a deep understanding of quality assurance and standardization.

The Standards Club provides an invaluable platform for students to:

  • Comprehend the pivotal role of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) in upholding national quality benchmarks and ensuring compliance.
  • Participate in dynamic technical discussions, competitions, and industry engagements that build practical expertise in standardization.
  • Actively contribute to the development and assessment of standards that address contemporary engineering challenges and future innovations.

Highlights of 2024-25

The Standards Club, with 53 members, engaged in activities that were designed to provide hands-on learning and practical exposure:

  • Orientation Session: The club's activities commenced with an insightful orientation session led by the faculty mentor. Students gained valuable insights into the functionalities of the BIS Care app, a crucial tool for verifying ISI-marked products and safeguarding consumer interests.
  • Standards Writing Contest: To foster analytical and documentation skills, the club organized a Standards Writing Competition. Participants were tasked with defining specifications for plain copier paper, offering a real-world exercise in applying standardization principles.
  • Industrial Visit:Club members embarked on an enriching industrial visit to Tison Industries in Kollam, a prominent PVC pipe manufacturing facility. This visit provided firsthand experience of quality control protocols, BIS certification processes, and compliance measures in a large-scale manufacturing environment. The student team was assisted by Mr. Sreeni B. (Tison Industries), Ms. Krishna Pushkaran (BIS), and Dr. Sreeja Balakrishnan (Faculty Mentor, Standards Club).
